What is a Travertine?

Travertine is a crystallised, partially metamorphosed Limestone, formed by natural mineral springs, it has a honeycombed structure and a lot of surface pitting and holes.

Travertine typically comes in two basic varieties: natural or filled. The pits and holes can be filled with resin to give each tile a solid surface or left unfilled for a more highly textured surface.

The filled-in areas won’t polish out, which creates an interesting contrast. Travertine is a compact variety of Limestone that contains various sized holes that are formed as a result of the continual flow of water through the stone, this creates bands that streak the Travertine, these holes can become very dirty and black.

Travertine floors should be sealed to protect the stone’s natural beauty and performance.

Problems

Travertine floor tiles and grout lines become dull and dirty, prone to scratching, staining, and fracturing, we often see many holes appearing on the surface which over time fills with dirt making the floor look less than impressive.

TRAVERTINE FLOOR
CLEANING & RESTORATION

To make Travertine floors clean, smooth and reflective, we employ both mechanical and chemical cleaning processes.

Step 1

Diamond grind the surface of the stone with a course grade diamond abrasive pad to remove surface scratches.

Step 2

Diamond hone the surface of the stone with a finer diamond abrasive, this process makes the surface of the stone very smooth and provides a satin finish.

Step 3

Diamond polish the surface of the stone with a finer diamond abrasive pads producing a high polished finish.

Chemical process

We apply a chemical process called powder polishing that reacts with the Calcite in the stone and produces a high gloss finish, note this process can only happen on certain types of Travertine floors.

Repairs

While carrying out these works we deep clean grout lines, resin repair cracks and holes, hone out stains, dull spots, etch marks and light scratches.

Sealing

Finally, we seal the floor with the correct natural stone floor sealer to help protect the Travertine and grout lines from spills and stains, making the Travertine water soluble.
