MAIN PROBLEMS
Natural stone floors
Natural stone floors are a great investment and add a touch of elegance to many properties, but these floors require maintenance to keep them looking clean and polished all year round.
Incorrect cleaning processes and materials can quickly dirty and dull the floor, grout lines and holes can become very dirty and stand out.
Scratches
What Causes the floors to dull and lose their polished finish, the primary cause of polished stone floors becoming dull is walking on them, prolonged foot traffic grinds the dust, sand, and grit from your shoes into the floor.
Although the scratching that occurs is very fine, it eventually covers the majority of the surface which over time dulls the finish to the point where it loses its high gloss and reflective properties.
Food and drink stains, etch marks and dull spots
Stone floors have different levels of porosity and can easily be discoloured and stained by food and drink spills, food and drink containing acid will etch and leave dull spots on the surface.
For example, orange juice, carbonated beverages, wine, tomato etc. will etch the surface. Other sources of dull spots and etch marks are cleaning products containing acid or high levels of alkaline or bleach.
Moisture
Local water may contain chlorine, salts, magnesium, potassium and other minerals. When water is used continuously to clean the stone floor it may ruin certain types of Marble and Limestone by causing pitting, spalling and yellowing.
Incorrect cleaning
Continuous use of water as the sole cleaning agent (without chemicals), or using dirty mops, or not changing the cleaning solution frequently enough, can cause the floors to look dingy, streaky and unattractive.
Dirty grout lines
Many floors have very dirty grout lines making the floor look very unattractive, most floors need to be vacuumed before mopping to remove the loose dirt and grit, most people mop floors with a very wet mop that moves the dirt around off the tile surface that then dries and builds up in the grout lines.
Seal coats
Seal coats get worn and diluted after a while, subject to the amount of use the floor receives, seals need topping up or renewing to help protect the floor from stains.
